Fishing Kona April 30, 2011 – Mark and Mike Day 1

Mark and his son Mike are in town to fish for ahi.  We got an early start and headed south looking for the south porpoise school.  We weren’t out long before we found a small pod right in front the harbor.  There were a few fish in there but not enough to keep us interested so we headed farther south looking for a bigger pile.  About mid day we found a big pile that had some fish showing on the sounder.  We went right to the greenstick but had to really work the pile before we got one to bit.  Mark was up first and did an awesome job fighting this 107 1/2lb ahi to the boat.  Tomorrow his son Mike is in the chair to try for an even bigger one!  More tomorrow!

Mike and Bev Back Again!

Mike and Bev of Seattle, WA fished again with me today.  Mike and Bev fished a few months ago with me and we got into some nice mahimahi and yellowfin tuna on the fly.  This month they were back in town to celebrate Bev’s birthday.  Unfortunately we tried hard to get into big fish but weren’t succfessful.  Mike did get a small ahi on his flyrod.  At least they had some fish to make poke with that night.  Happy Birthday Bev!

April 27, 2011 – Everyday is Different Fishing Kona

Dan and his wife Nan of Fernley, NV are back in town for their yearly trip to Kona.  They’re staying in a condo and they wanted to catch something to take home for dinner.  Since yesterday was tough fishing offshore, I decided to try for ono early in the morning and then head offshore later in the afternoon in search of bigger game.  I put the first lure out right inside the harbor mouth, something I never do.  As I pinned the first line up on the outrigger it was yanked out of my hand with a solid bite.  We were in less than 20 fathoms of water which is unusually shallow for ono.  Nan jumped in the chair and fought a nice 20lb ono to the boat.  We took a lap up to the airport area and then back down towards the harbor without anymore bites so we headed into deeper water.  Shortly after we missed a short nose spearfish.  We circled the area hoping for more bites when suddenly Dan and I saw a big blue marlin pile on the long corner bait.  The fish took out several hundred yards of line within minutes and came back at the boat and gave us a series of nice jumps just a few yards away.  Dan was in the chair and did a great job fighting the fish for well over an hour when the hooks finally pulled.  We set the lines back up and soon after Nan was in the chair fighting her first ever short nose spearfish which we quickly released and estimated at about 30lbs.  In a few weeks Dan’s father will be fishing 2 days with me and hopefully we can get him into some good fishing too!

Kona Fish Report April 26, 2011 – Ono For Austin and Will

Austin and Will of Houston, TX fished with me today.  After yesterday’s blue marlin right in front the harbor I thought for sure we’d get a shot at one today. We tried hard, fishing from the harbor down 18 miles  south to Hookena without a bite.  We found a nice porpoise school that had a few ahi but the fish stayed down deep so we decided to troll our way back north.  Arriving outside the harbor we still didn’t get a bite.  So as a last resort we trolled past the airport and back to the harbor and got lucky with a nice 25lb ono.  Not a monster but the guys were glad to not get skunked!

Kona Fish Report – April 25, 2011

Kona resident Jim H. brought along his long time friends Brock and his son Jonathon from southern California for some offshore action.  Jim has fished about five times with me and as much as I hate to admit it he has got skunked ALL FIVE TIMES!  So, the pressure was on today, BIG TIME!  As he walked down the dock to the boat I joked that he should have brought some ti leaves (to ward off evil spirits) and a priest praying that we would catch something today.  Of course Jim charters me for a half day putting even more pressure on me….typical.  :)    Jim jumps aboard and swears he isn’t going to pay unless we catch something!  After all the jokes we shove off to try our luck.  I didn’t run too far because we only had 4 hours to fish.  About 45 minutes into it on the 500 fathom line I saw a boil on the long rigger and the fish disappear in a ball of white water.  Then it pops up on the stinger lure and after a flurry of tries takes the lure and starts a series of big jumps away from the boat.  14 year old Jonathon jumps in the chair and after a 20 minute fight lands his first blue marlin weighing 161lbs!  Although we did catch a fish today, I guess you could say Jim still hasn’t caught one and is still technically skunked!
